Perdita Felicien was born on 29 August 1980 in Oshawa, Ontario. Felicien uses her mother’s maiden name instead of her father’s. Her origins are from the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. Her mother christened her “Perdita” after she overheard the name on the TV game show, The Price is Right.

Perdita Felicien went to Pickering, Ontario, where she studied as a student. She started her athletic career by competing in track and field events at her school. She was excited to join her school’s track and field team after winning an Award of Excellence in the Canada Fitness Award Program when she was in grade 3. She started with competing in the 100m dash. She was motivated by Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin of Canada which motivated her in adding the 200m dash and long jump. Felicien devoted herself to hurdling at Pine Ridge Secondary School. She has also acquired the Ontario high-school hurdling championship in 1998. Her performance at a scholastic meet in Ohio drew her many offers of athletic scholarships from a number of U.S. universities. She accepted the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she entered the study of kinesiology.

College

Perdita Felicien was coached by Gary Winckler, in her first year while competing at the university level. She has received All-American honours and in the 100m, hurdles set. She made the record for the fastest time by a freshman in NCAA records for the event. The subsequent year she was ranked No. 1 in the 100 m hurdles by the NCAA for the entire outdoor season. She was also the first Illinois athlete to ever win a national championship during both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Her exceptional plays in the first of three consecutive University of Illinois Female Athlete of the Year awards. This also led her to be voted the U.S. Track Coaches Association National Female Outdoor Athlete of the Year.

A victorious Felicien won her second consecutive 100 m hurdles national title in 2003. This was her path to becoming the first University of Illinois female athlete to be named the Big Ten Conference “Athlete of the Year” while also earning NCAA Female Track & Field Athlete of the Year honours.

Senior career

A much-anticipated confrontation with overcoming great Gail Devers took place in March 2004. Here, Felicien set a new record in winning against the three-time hurdles world champion in the 60 m hurdle final at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary. She won six events in a row which led to the Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. She was one of the favorites to win gold in the 100 m hurdles on August 24, particularly after Devers pulled out with an injury. Surprisingly, in the event final, Felicien failed to clear the first hurdle and fell into the nearby lane hitting down the Russian competitor, Irina Shevchenko, and leading her out of the race and a chance at an Olympic medal, leading to the obvious dismay of Shevchenko.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Felicien was unable to race due to a foot injury. During this time Felicien took up the job as a guest commentator for CBC Television’s 2008 Olympics coverage of hurdles.

In June 2012, Felicien was unable to qualify for the Canadian Olympic team for the 2012 London Olympics. She had finished third in the 2012 Canadian Olympic trials for track and field, in the 100m hurdles event. But she was declared out due to a false start.

Perdita Felicien retired from racing in 2013 and returned to school to study journalism. She became a writer/reporter with CHCH News in Hamilton, Ontario. She has covered many events and has been covering the recent 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
