Carney presently produces and writes music from his Audio Eagle recording facility in Nashville, Tennessee. He has worked with a diverse range of musicians, including the Black Keys, Michelle Branch, Calvin Johnson, Tennis, the Sheepdogs, Beaten Awake, Houseguest, Churchbuilder, Jessy Wilson, Kramies, and *repeat repeat.

In an interview with Modern Drummer, Carney stated that he never took drum lessons as a child, but instead learned by imitating friends who were also drummers, using a $150 drum set purchased with money earned from a job washing dishes at the Mustard Seed Market & Café in Bath Township, an Akron suburb. Carney was influenced musically as a youngster by Pavement, Captain Beefheart, and fellow Akron band Devo.

After his parents separated when he was six, Carney split his time between his mother, Mary Stormer, and his father, Jim Carney, who had moved to a neighborhood in West Akron (Ohio) not far from where he and Mary resided. Patrick and Dan met and played tag football with Auerbach’s buddies in this new area, although Patrick and Auerbach did not become friends until high school.

Carney and Auerbach, the Black Keys’ lead vocalist and guitarist, started the band in 2001 and released their debut album The Big Come Up less than a year later. Thickfreakness followed in 2003, and Rubber Factory followed in 2004. Magic Potion, the band’s fourth album, was released in 2006. Attack & Release, their critically praised fifth album, was released in 2008, followed by Brothers in 2010. El Camino was published by the band in 2011, and Turn Blue was released in 2014. Delta Kreme, the band’s most recent album, was released in 2021.

Carney established a new band called Drummer in 2009, when fellow Black Keys member Dan Auerbach was on his solo tour, and played bass guitar. In the same year, they released their debut album, Feel Good Together. Carney was the Rentals’ drummer on their 2014 album Lost in Alphaville. Carney also composed the main theme music for the Netflix sitcom BoJack Horseman in 2014.

Patrick expressed his displeasure with the current trend for record companies (particularly Warner Brothers) to ‘bundle’ tickets and record sales, which the band believes is a bad deal for the artist, as well as the record industries’ increasing emphasis on streaming numbers and social media profiles, in a band interview with Joe Rogan in 2019.
