Soon after, Guzman was released and the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said that he supported the decision in order to prevent more bloodshed. But things didn’t end there. The next month, one of the officers who arrested Ovidio was Assassinated. But on 8th May 2020, Santiago Nieto, head of Mexico’s Unidad de Intelligencia Financiera, confirmed that the Government of Mexico froze the accounts of Ovidio and 330 other people linked with the Cartel.

Guzman 2023 Arrest

On 5th January 2023, Guzman was once again arrested from his home district, Culiacan. He was successfully transported to Mexico City, where he was then presented before the offices of the Attorney General’s organized crime special prosecutor. Later in the afternoon, he was sent to Altiplano maximum security federal prison. Post to his arrest, there were incidents of Gunfire, roadblock, and fires throughout the cities of Culiacan, Los Mochis, and Guasave. In fact, Governor Ruben Rocha Moya called for the public to shelter in a place. Even, Culiacan Airport had to be shut down after a passenger plane took gunfire. The city broke with loot and chaos, and several banks had to shut down across the state. Till now, a total of 18 casualties are reported and two police officers were also killed along with many other unreported killings across the state.
