Nathan Hirayama was born on 23 March 1988 in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. As of 2021, he is 33 years old. He is about 183 cm (6 ft 0 in) tall and weighs 88 kg. Hirayama is of Japanese Canadian origin. His parents were also born and raised in Canada. Hirayama’s father, Garry Hirayama was also a professional player. He represented Canada in both codes of the game in the 1980s, winning 12 caps as fly-half for the national team. He was also a part of Canada’s first sevens team to travel to Hong Kong. Together they are known as the first-ever rugby-playing father-son duo for Canada. He completed his school education at McRoberts Secondary School and graduated from the University of Victoria.

Fifteens

Due to his exceptional performances, he was selected for the Canadian national team. He attended the 2007, 2011, and 2015 Rugby World Cups. Though, he was not able to play in any games in 2007. He joined in the second half in two of the four Canada matches as a substitute in 2011 but didn’t score points. Hirayama was present in all four matches of the starting fly-half in 2015. He was substituted in only one and scored a 20-point record in the tournament.

Sevens

Nathan Hirayama played for the first time for the Canadian sevens team in the 2006 Dubai Sevens at age 18. Two years later he played for the first time for the Canadian national men’s team against Portugal in Lisbon. He was chosen for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Russia supporting Canada to win the Plate championship and completing as the tournament’s top scorer with 49 points. Hirayama was a part of Canada’s rugby sevens team in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 Commonwealth Games. He has also played at the Pan American Games, winning gold in 2011 and 2015. He won a silver in 2019.
