Junior Career

Nafissatou Thiam won her first national age-group title in 2009. By this time she was already specializing in the heptathlon. At that time she looked up to the Swedish heptathlete Carolina Klüft.

At the 2011 World Youth Championships in Athletics held in Lille, France, Thiam completed fourth in the heptathlon. After that, she finished 14th at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Athletics in the heptathlon, as a first-year junior and scored a total of 5384 points.

On 3 February 2013, Thiam broke the junior indoor world record in the pentathlon at an event in Ghent with a total of 4558 points. She became the first Belgium woman to break the record but it was not ratified due to the absence of an anti-doping test.

In July 2013, Thiam obtained the gold medal in the heptathlon at the European Junior Athletics Championships. This made a new Belgian record of 6298 points.

Senior Career

Nafissatou Thiam won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 2014 in the Heptathlon event.

In 2015, she won the silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Pentathlon. In the same year, she won another silver at the European U23 Championships in High Jump.

2016, Thiam gained the gold medal in the heptathlon at the Olympic Games in Rio with 6810 points. This marked her personal best marks in five of the seven disciplines. She also defeated the reigning Olympic and World Champion Jessica Ennis-Hill of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Later on in the year 2017, Thiam went into the Athletics World Championships in London as a favorite to win the competition. She ended up obtaining the heptathlon world title and becoming the first Belgian to win a World Athletics Championships gold medal.

She also won the gold medal at the 2018 European Championships, becoming the third woman to win Olympic Games, World and European Championships in the heptathlon. She took the title after Carolina Klüft and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

On 5 March 2021, Thiam won the pentathlon at the 2021 European Indoor Championships. Later on, in August 2021, she won her second gold medal at the Olympic games.

Thiam is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Belgium.
