On October 28, 2019, Whittome was chosen as the Labour candidate for Nottingham East. She earned the unofficial moniker “Baby of the House” because, at the age of 23, she was the youngest member of parliament in the Commons. Since the 1992 general election, the Labour Party has won the constituency each time a candidate ran for it. Chris Leslie, a former Baby of the House, had previously held the position. Whittome, who is of Punjabi heritage, was Nottingham’s first BAME MP to be elected. She considers herself a democratic socialist.

In the 2020 Labour Party leadership contest, Whittome initially backed Clive Lewis, but after Lewis resigned, Whittome endorsed Emily Thornberry. Whittome said on February 28, 2020, that she would support Dawn Butler for deputy and Rebecca Long-Bailey for a leader.

Whittome organised a letter in February 2020 that was signed by 170 MPs and demanded that criminals who were not born in Jamaica not be deported. She was employed part-time as a caregiver at a care facility during the COVID-19 epidemic. Whittome mentioned the lack of PPE in her area of employment during her April appearance on Newsnight. She claimed that she was terminated from her position as a caregiver for “spreading disinformation” shortly after her participation on the show.
