Marsh has played for Australia in all three formats of the game, making his debut in the 2011–12 season and being a member of the Australian T20 World Cup-winning side in 2021. Marsh is Geoff Marsh’s second son and Shaun Marsh’s younger brother, both of whom have played for the Australian national team. His sister, Melissa Marsh, played professional basketball in Australian leagues, and he is a cousin of Brad Sheppard of the West Coast Eagles. He grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and went to Wesley College.

Mitchell Marsh made his Warriors debut at the age of 17 in a Ford Ranger Cup game at Bunbury in February 2009. He became Western Australia’s youngest début in 70 years and the youngest player in an Australian domestic one-day game. He was the team captain for the 2010 Under-19 Cricket World Cup and played for Australia’s under-19 squad against India in April 2009. Marsh had a fantastic campaign as Australia won the tournament under his leadership, making 201 runs, including a match-winning 97 in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. Marsh was acquired by the Deccan Chargers for the 2010 Indian Premier League season, then in 2011, he was purchased by the Pune Warriors, who were coached at the time by his former coach.
