Career of Mike Pettine

Pettine grew raised in a football family. As a teenager, his father, a long-time high school football coach in Pennsylvania, taught him how to play and subsequently coached him. Pettine went on to play collegiate football at Virginia after high school. He started his football career as a quarterback before switching to defensive back during his junior year. As a free safety, he lettered two years (1986, 1987) and led the team in interceptions in 1986. Pettine began his coaching career after college as an assistant coach to his father at Central Bucks West High School for five seasons. Pettine began coaching college after the 1992 season. Pettine began coaching with Pittsburgh University in 1993, under the direction of head coach Johnny Majors. The Panthers went 3-8 in back-to-back seasons during his two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant. Pettine returned to the Philadelphia area in 1995 and took his first head coaching job. For two seasons, he was the head coach at William Tennent High School. Pettine accepted the head coaching position at North Penn High School, a local rival of Central Bucks West High School, where his father was still coaching, after William Tennent. Pettine would be the North Penn coach for five years (1997-2001). As Pettine fought his father for region domination, two documentaries were made about the local Father/Son coaching battles. Between 1997 and 1999, however, Pettine went 0-5 against his father. Pettine’s father retired after going 45-0 and winning three consecutive State championships from 1997 to 1999. Pettine made his NFL debut in 2002 as a coaching assistant for the Baltimore Ravens. He assisted in the development of game plans and scouting reports for prospective opponents throughout his first two years with the Ravens. Pettine was promoted to assistant defensive line coach in 2004, working closely with Rex Ryan. Pettine would work closely with Ryan for the first time in his nine-year tenure in 2004. He was elevated to outside linebacker coach in 2005, when Ryan was appointed to defensive coordinator. The Ravens had one of the best defensive teams in the league for the next four seasons with Pettine at the helm. When Ryan was hired as the head coach of the New York Jets in 2009, he named Pettine as his defensive coordinator. The Jets reached the AFC championship game in both of Pettine’s first two seasons with the team. The Jets, on the other hand, deteriorated after 2010, missing the playoffs in each of the next two seasons. Pettine accepted a lateral position with the Buffalo Bills and new head coach Doug Marrone after the 2012 season. His new job came with a greater level of responsibility. Ryan remained the primary defensive play-caller for the Jets while serving as their defensive coordinator. With the Bills, Pettine was in charge of the defense’s play calling. Pettine’s lone season with the Bills saw the defense improve dramatically, positioning him as a top head coaching contender. Pettine was hired by the Cleveland Browns to replace the vacant head coaching post at the end of the 2013 season. The club had improved from the previous season, winning more games (7) than in any other year before 2007. Pettine was fired following the Browns’ three-game winning streak in 2014. Pettine spent 2017 as a defensive consultant for the Seattle Seahawks after not coaching during the 2016 NFL season. Pettine returned to full-time coaching in 2018, when he was hired the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator under head coach Mike McCarthy. The squad finished 6-9-1, tying for the fewest victories the Packers have ever had in McCarthy’s twelve-year tenure. Pettine was retained by new head coach Matt LaFleur after McCarthy was fired following the 2018 season.
