Michael Hooper Life and Education

Playing sport, and especially Rugby, was always at the forefront for Michael and his elder brother Richard as they grew up on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. He was born to David and Raleen Hooper. His father Davud was also a Rugby Player. From Year 5 to Year 12, he attended St. Pius, and Rugby was a part of their curriculum, which meant that the school made it a game for everyone, and that all kids earned an opportunity to participate. They lost a lot of games, but they built a tremendous sense of camaraderie, and it’s largely because of that camaraderie that Richard is still playing first grade for Manly now. However he got his degree from Macquarie University.

Michael Hooper Career

Hooper debuted for the Brumbies in 2010, filling in for the injured George Smith. He was signed by the New South Wales Waratahs after a breakout season with the Brumbies in 2012. [6] Hooper had a breakout year in 2013, winning numerous awards including Brumbies best forward, Australian Rugby Union Rookie of the Year, and third position for the John Eales Medal despite only appearing in half of the polling games. Hooper won the Australian Super 15 player of the year award as well as the Waratahs player of the year award in 2013 after appearing in every Waratahs Super Rugby game. After squad regular Dave Dennis was ruled out of the game due to injury following the Waratahs’ first game of the 2014 season against the Western Force on 1 March 2014, Hooper was named captain for the Waratahs’ match against the Queensland Reds. At ANZ Stadium, he led the Waratahs to a 32-5 victory over the Reds. He went on to play every game the Waratahs had left in 2014, including the Grand Final against the Crusaders, which he captained and led the side to a 33–32 victory at ANZ Stadium.

In August 2020, it was revealed that Hooper had accepted a contract with Toyota Verblitz of the Japanese Top League for the 2020–21 season, marking his first substantial move away from Super Rugby since joining the Brumbies in 2010. Hooper made his international debut for Australia against Scotland in Newcastle on June 5, 2012, coming off the bench (in the 65th minute). After regular flanker and captain David Pocock suffered a knee injury, Hooper started every Test game until the final Spring Tour game (and Nathan Sharpe’s final Wallabies game) against Wales in Cardiff, where he came off the bench to make room for David Pocock. When David Pocock’s season was cut short due to a knee injury, Hooper stepped up and played in all of the Wallabies’ Test matches, winning the John Eales Medal as ‘Wallabies player of the year’. Pocock suffered another season-ending knee injury in 2014, and in Ewen McKenzie’s second year as Wallabies coach, McKenzie named Hooper as vice-captain alongside his Waratahs teammate Adam Ashley-Cooper, and his former Brumbies teammate Stephen Moore as Australia captain for the three-test June series against France. When captain Stephen Moore exited the field in the fifth minute with a knee injury, Hooper took over as captain for the remainder of the game. He scored a touchdown in the first half of the game and put in a good performance against France in the Wallabies’ 50-23 victory at Suncorp Stadium.  Iain Payten of foxsports.com.au rated Hooper as one of the greatest players on the field during the game, and dubbed him “the Energizer Bunny of World Rugby.” Following Stephen Moore’s season-ending injury in the first test of 2014 against France in Brisbane, Hooper was appointed as the Wallabies captain for the remainder of the 2014 Test season, making him the 82nd Test captain of the side and the youngest since Ken Catchpole in 1961.

For the second year in a row, Hooper was named Peoples Choice – Wallaby of the Year at the John Eales Medal awards night, following another great Super Rugby season. He also held his starting spot, forcing David Pocock to move to Number 8 following his comeback from injury. He was also named to the 31-man team for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. In 2016, Hooper was given the John Eales Medal for the fourth time, making him the fourth player to win it twice. Hooper’s abrasive playing style has earned him eight yellow cards in his international career, a feat only matched by Georgian Viktor Kolelishvili.
