He was born on  20 November 1988 in New Canaan, Connecticut, United States to his parents,  Ana Pacioretty and Raymond Pacioretty. Max is currently 34 years old. Theresa Pacioretty (née Savoie), Pacioretty’s paternal grandmother, is a Montreal-born French Canadian. Mother of Pacioretty is Mexican-born. With the New York Rangers junior ice hockey club, Pacioretty participated in the 2002 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. After playing high school hockey at New Canaan High School, where his freshman year saw him finish first in the state in scoring, Pacioretty transferred to The Taft School in Watertown, Connecticut. The next year, in 2006–2007, Pacioretty spent one season as a junior hockey player for the Sioux City Musketeers of the United States Hockey League (USHL). After the season, Pacioretty was chosen by the Montreal Canadiens in the first round, 22nd overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The pick had previously been acquired by the Canadiens in a trade with the San Jose Sharks.

Pacioretty was standing adjacent to the Wild goal, trying to pass the puck, with no one in his immediate vicinity. He continued to stand on the ice with his right leg raised. With 19.3 seconds left in the game, play was halted. The athletic training personnel for the Hurricanes onto the ice to help Pacioretty, who was flanked by a few teammates.

Pacioretty was then led back to the Hurricanes bench by his teammates while not putting any weight on his right leg or foot.
He was placed on injured reserve by the Hurricanes on Friday, which means he will be out for at least the next seven contests.
