His full name is Martin John Christopher Freeman. He was born on 8 September 1971 in Aldershot, Hampshire. He has four more siblings and is the youngest. He was born to Philomena (née Norris) and naval officer Geoffrey Freeman. His parents separated when he was a child and his father passed away due to a heart attack when he was 10. Freeman finished high school in the Salesian School in Chertsey, Surrey, and later graduated from Brooklands College in nearby Weybridge for media studies. His older brother, Tim is a singer with the group Frazier Chorus. He is a vegetarian and is a practicing Catholic. He has known actor Simon Pegg for a long time and is one of his best friends. Simon is the godfather of his son.

Freeman currently lives in the Belsize Park area of London. Previously, he lived in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, with his then-wife actress Amanda Abbington. They were married from 2000 to 2016. The two of them together have a son named Joe and a daughter named Grace. They have appeared together in shows and movies such as Sherlock, Swinging with the Finkels, The Debt, The Robinsons, and The All Together. Freeman studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He has appeared in at least 18 TV shows, 14 theatre productions, and several radio productions. He has appeared in the sitcom Hardware (2003-2004). There are many movies he has done like, Ali G Indahouse (2002) and Love Actually (2003).

Freeman started his career in more serious roles like Lord Shaftesbury in the 2003 BBC historical drama Charles II: The Power and The Passion. He also made a short appearance in the pilot episode of the second series of This Life.  In 2007, he was a cast in The All Together written and directed by Gavin Claxton and also in the Bill Kenwright theatre production of The Last Laugh. In May 2009, he starred in Boy Meets Girl which is a four-part drama.

Freeman was a part of the cast in all three films of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s comedic Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. On 5 October 2013, he was bestowed with a fellowship carrying his name by the members of University College Dublin’s Literary & Historical Society. He initiated the main role in Shakespeare’s play Richard III in July 2014 at Trafalgar Studios.

Freeman starred as producer Milton Fruchtman in the television film The Eichmann Show in 2015. It was based on blacklisted TV director Leo Hurwitz’s filming of the 1961 trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann.

Since March 2020, he has been a part of the FX/Sky One comedy series Breeders. He also works as a creator and an executive producer for the series.

Freeman has played the role of the beloved Dr. John Watson in the BBC’s contemporary adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The first episode of the series, Sherlock, “A Study in Pink”, was broadcast on 25 July 2010. It was critically acclaimed and was a major hit. He won the 2011 BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actor and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his role in the show.

Freeman played the role of Bilbo Baggins. He was the main character, in the three-part Peter Jackson film series The Hobbit. His acting in the first part, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, earned him a nomination as the Best Hero at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards and Best Actor at the 18th Empire Awards.

Later on, in 2014, he performed the role of the insurance salesman Lester Nygaard in the dark comedy-crime drama series Fargo. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Critics’ Choice Television Award for his exceptional performance.

He has also played the role of Everett K. Ross, a Central Intelligence Agency agent in Captain America: Civil War, which was released in May 2016 and in Black Panther. He has made two appearances in Marvel Cinematic Universe as of now.
