Following reports that he was due to retire due to difficulty in securing a world tour contract, in December 2020, Cavendish announced his return to Deceuninck-Quick Step for the 2021 season.

As an amateur, he played for Team Persil in 2004, but later started his professional career with Team Sparkasse in 2005 and continued till 2006.  he joined T-Mobile Team in 2006, Team Sky in 2012, Omega-Pharma Quick-Step in 2013, Team Dimension Data in 2016, Bahrain McLaren in 2020, and Deceuninck–Quick-Step in 2021 till today. Some of his remarkable wins are in Grand Tours, Stage Races, One-Day Races, and Classics. He had a tour of De France, Giro d’Itaia, Vuelta a Espana, and some stage races like Ster ZLM Toer, Tour of Quatar, and Dubai Tour.
