Mana Shim Sexual Abuse Scandal Explained

Former player Mana Shim has spoken out for the first time since sexual harassment and abuse allegations against coach Paul Riley surfaced. Shim, who played for Riley at Portland Thorns FC, described Riley and his staff as frightening, and how the abuse destroyed their careers. Riley was sacked by the North Carolina Courage last week following an investigation by The Athletic that cited players on the record saying that Riley used his influence and authority for years to sexually harass players and, in one instance, force a player into having sex with him.
Riley disputed the allegations in the story published by The Athletic. Riley could not be reached for comment by CNN.
As a result of the article documenting claims of sexual coercion and misbehavior against Riley, who coached three NWSL clubs over eight seasons, NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird resigned and the league canceled all scheduled matches for last weekend.

Former athlete Sinead Farrelly recounted how a married Riley lured her into his hotel room to have sex in the Athletic article. Another claimed incident involves Riley dragging Farrelly and teammate Shim back to his residence and forcing the two to kiss.
