He has two siblings one of them is his sister, Eimear, and the other one is his brother, Ciaran. His brother still lives in Ireland. There is not much known about his parents or his childhood. He is a tenor and plays piano and guitar. He was scouted by a theatre agency. It was while he was performing in production in Ireland. He then shifted to London to pursue a career in musical theatre. This led to him securing a role in the West End production of Les Misérables.

The list of the roles and musicals he has played is quite huge and very impressive. He has performed in many diverse roles around Ireland and has also directed and written shows. His first role in the theatre was in 2005. He was cast in the chorus of The Wireman at the Gaiety Theatre. He then proceeded to play Rod in Singin’ in the Rain and Ethan in The Full Monty. He has played the role of Aladdin in Aladdin and Collins in Michael Collins: A Musical Drama, both at the Cork Opera House, Prince Charming in Cinderella, and Chorus in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. In 2008, he entered the West End production of Les Misérables. He joined as a swing and, as a member of the cast. He was part of the Les Misérables concert with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on the Isle of Wight. There are many things he did with the cast and crew and eventually finished in Les Misérables on 18 June 2011. Donnelly’s role was as Raoul in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty’s Theatre During this time. During this time he also featured in commercials for McDonald’s and Jameson Whiskey. He bagged a few television shows like The Tudors, The Open House, The Late Late Show, and Showbands. On 12 November 2012, Donnelly was cast in the role of Tony in Billy Elliot The Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre.

Later on 12 June 2017, Killian Donnelly came back to the West End production of Les Misérables to play the lead role. He later reprised the character in the 2018 tour which was to be held in the United Kingdom and Ireland. In February 2020, he came back to The Phantom of the Opera. This time he played The Phantom on the 2020 UK Tour. But unfortunately, due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the tour was concluded just a few weeks within its run at Curve, Leicester. Though on 4 December 2020, it was announced that Donnelly will reprise the character of The Phantom in the West End production of The Phantom of the Opera. It is programmed to reopen in June 2021.
