Kamalpreet Kaur Early Life

Kamalpreet Kaur was born on 4 March 1996 in Kabar Wala, Malout, a village in the Sri Muktsar Sahib District of Punjab.  She was not at all inclined towards her academics, however, fascinated by sports. In the year 2012, she took up athletics on the insistence of her physical education coach and was placed fourth in her first state meet. Initially, she started playing shot put but then she started getting serious for her sports in the year 2014. She began her initial training at the  Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in her village. From here she was made the switch to discus throw from shot put after her coach, Preethpal Maru’s suggestion who himself was a discus thrower.

Kamalpreet Kaur Career

Kamalpreet Kaur started her professional training at the Sports Authority Of India(SAI). In the year 2016, she became the U-18 and U-20 national champions. In the year 2017, at the 29th World University Games, she was placed at the sixth position. Kamalpreet could not clear the qualifying round at the Asian Games Jakarta in 2018. In the year 2019, she clinched the gold medal in the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships. At the Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships, Patiala, Kamalpreet broke the national record in the discus throw event in the year 2020. After her record-breaking victory, she secured her position in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 which was held in 2021 due to coronavirus pandemic. She qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics finals in the discus throw with a mark of 64 m.

Kamalpreet Kaur is employed with the Indian Railways. The people in Kamalpreet’s village were very conservative and according to them, girls should only focus on household works rather than on sports and studies. Initially, her mother too was not supportive and happy about her decision of opting for sports but her father encouraged and supported her for the discus throw. In one of her interviews, Kamalpreet said that girls should be allowed to follow their dreams and realize their potential. She has been honored by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) and received a cheque of RS. 2 Lakhs and a siropa for her achievements by the SGPC president.
