Payette was born in the city of Montreal in the province of Quebec to Andre Payette and Jacqueline Payette. She went to Montreal’s elementary and high schools (Collège Mont-Saint-Louis). She also spent three years at Collège Regina Assumpta. In 1982, she graduated from the United World College of the Atlantic in South Wales, United Kingdom, with an International Baccalaureate diploma. Payette studied in McGill University for her undergraduate studies, earning a B.Eng. in Electrical Engineering in 1986 and a M.A.Sc. in Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1990.

Payette worked as a systems engineer at IBM Canada’s Science Engineering branch from 1986 to 1988. She worked as a teaching assistant and was involved in a high-performance computer architecture project while a graduate student at the University of Toronto from 1988 to 1990. Payette began a one-year visiting scientist appointment at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zürich, Switzerland, in the Communications and Science section in January 1991. In January 1992, she returned to Canada and joined Bell-Northern Research’s Speech Research Group in Montreal, where she was in charge of a study in telephone speech interpretation using computer voice recognition. In June 1992, the CSA chose Payette as one of four astronauts from a pool of 5,330 applicants. She served as a technical advisor on the Mobile Servicing System, an advanced robotics system and Canada’s contribution to the International Space Station, after completing basic training in Canada. [3] Payette founded the Canadian Astronaut Program’s Human-Computer Interaction Group in 1993 and served as a technical specialist on the NATO International Research Study Group on Speech Processing.  In August 1996, Payette reported to the Johnson Space Center to begin mission specialist training. She was assigned to work on technical issues for the Astronaut Office Robotics Branch after finishing one year of training. In the spring of 1998, Payette finished her primary astronaut training. She was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010. In the year 2000, she was also awarded a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. At the University of Alberta’s fall convocation on November 22, 2006, Payette received an honorary degree, as did the University of British Columbia’s convocation on November 25, 2010.

Payette was honoured with the opening of Julie Payette Public School in Whitby, Ontario on September 6, 2011. Payette is the inspiration for the character ‘Anna Johnson’ in the science-fiction novel The 13th Day of Christmas. The book is about the Canadian Space Agency and NASA’s first cooperative expedition to Mars. Payette was given a paperback copy of the book.
