Joe Lansdale Career
Hap Collins and Leonard Pine, two friends who reside in the imaginary town of Laborde in East Texas, solve a variety of frequently unpleasant crimes in his Hap and Leonard series of twelve novels, four novellas, and three short story collections. Hap, a white working-class laborer in his mid-forties who formerly demonstrated against the Vietnam War and spent time in federal jail rather than be conscripted, and Leonard, a homosexual black Vietnam vet, are an unusual match. Both of them are skilled fighters, and the stories (told from Hap’s point of view) are filled with violence, profanity, and sexual content. Lansdale portrays an East Texas that is generally “decent,” but marred by prejudice, illiteracy, urban and rural impoverishment, and public-sector corruption. The subject matter is grim at times, and there are images of violent brutality. These books are also known for their keen wit and “wisecracking” banter. These books have been converted into a SundanceTV television series, and a series of graphic novels will be released in early 2017. Season 2 is based on the second Hap and Leonard novel, Mucho Mojo, and Season 3 is based on the third novel, The Two-Bear Mambo, which launched on 3/7/18.
