Early Life & Family of Jane Campion

Campion was the second child of Edith Campion (née Beverley Georgette Hannah), an actress, writer, and heiress, and Richard M. Campion, a teacher and theatre and opera director, and was born in Wellington, New Zealand. Robert Hannah, a well-known shoe producer for whom Antrim House was built, was her maternal great-grandfather. Her father was a member of the Christian Exclusive Brethren group, which is a fundamentalist Christian cult. Campion grew up in the world of New Zealand theatre with her sister Anna, who is a year and a half her older, and brother Michael, who is seven years her junior. The New Zealand Players were founded by their parents. Campion initially turned down a career in the theatrical arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Victoria University of Wellington in 1975 instead. She joined the Chelsea Art School in London in 1976 and traveled extensively around Europe. In 1981, she earned a graduate diploma in visual arts (painting) from the University of Sydney’s Sydney College of the Arts. Campion’s later cinema work was influenced in part by her art school degree; she has named painter Frida Kahlo and sculptor Joseph Beuys as influences even later in her career. Campion’s discontent with painting’s limitations led her to the cinema, with her first short, Tissues, released in 1980.
