James Todd Spader was born on 7 February 1960 in Boston, Massachusetts in U.S. He was born as the youngest of three children to his parents, Jean (née Fraser) and Stoddard (“Todd”) Greenwood Spader. They were both teachers. He grew up around women who were dominating and influenced him during his life. His early education was at various private schools like, Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts, with his father as one of the teachers and The Pike School, where his mother was teaching art. Later he transferred to Phillips Academy. From there he got well acquainted with the former President’s son John F. Kennedy Jr. At the age of seventeen he dropped out and moved to New York City to pursue his career in acting. While he did minor roles, James Spader had taken up other jobs like bartending, teaching yoga, driving a meat truck, loading railroad cars, and being a stable boy.
