He moved to Toronto and started performing at local clubs as a commercial artist. He first performed with Sylvia Fricker, now Sylvia Tyson in 1959 and then kept performing with her on occasion. They started performing together as Ian and Sylvie at the Village corner. Ian and Sylvia married, and started their own group called “The Great Speckled Bird”. They used to stay in southern Alberta and traveled all over the world together, during which they produced 13 albums of Folk and Country Music.

After getting widespread recognition, Tyson started his own show on CTV called “The Ian Tyson Show” where Sylvia and “The Great Speckled Bird” often appeared. Together with music manager and producer Neil MacGonigill, he released his album “Old Corrals and Sagebrush” which was very well received at that time. In 2005 his song “Four Strong Winds” became chosen as the greatest Canadian Song of all time in the series “50 Tracks: The Canadian Version”. He influenced young Canadian artists like Neil Young, Johnny Cash, and Judy Collins who produced their own versions of his song “Four Strong Winds”. Tyson’s song “One Single River” was recorded by Bob Dylan and “The Band” but was never released. He and Sylvia joined together and sang their signature song “Four Strong Winds” at the 50th anniversary of the Mariposa Folk Festival.

Ian suffered vocal Chord scarring in 2006 due to his performance at a concert in Havelock Country Jamboree, and he also suffered a virus attack before that during a flight to Denver. Ian Tyson died on 29th December 2022 at the age of 89 at his ranch in Alberta. According to his manager, he had ongoing health issues and had once suffered a heart attack. He also had open heart surgery in 2015. He was named to the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame along with Sylvia in 1989. In October 1994, he became a member of the Order of Canada and received a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award. Ian and Sylvia were inducted into the Mariposa Hall of Fame in 2006.  He was paid tribute with the album “The Gift” in 2007, which consisted of songs by Tyson, sung by famous artists.

He wrote a book after his song “La Primera”, called “La Primera: The Story of Wild Mustangs” and belongs to the Young Adult Fiction genre. Tyson wrote his autobiography “The Long Trail: My life in the West” which describes his life, his cultural ideals, and his fading reality.
