Helen Elizabeth Skelton was born on July 19, 1983, in the Cumbrian village of Kirkby Thore to Janet and Richard Skelton. Gavin Richard Skelton, her older brother, raised her. Both siblings absolutely loved outdoor sports, and Gavin went on to play football. Helen was also inspired by this to pursue a career as a sports broadcaster later in her professional life. Her family had owned an animal farm for generations, and her dad earned his living on the farm. As a result, Helen grew up surrounded by nature. She was an active child who adored animals. Helen Skeleton started working in the public relations departments of a few institutions after graduating from journalism school. After a little while, she wanted to work in journalism.
