Gino Odjick Biography (Birthday & Early Life)

Odjick was born in the Kitigan Zibi Algonquin reserve, which is located outside of Maniwaki, Quebec. Joe’s father, Basil, was born at Rapid Lake, Ontario, in 1939 to part-French Marie-Antoinette Marchand and a trapper and fishing guide named Basil. Basil was later murdered in France, during World War II, in 1944. Odjick eventually utilised 29 for his playing career, which was the registration number he received from the institution. In addition to raising at least 32 foster children, Odjick was Joe and Giselle’s lone son and the fourth kid out of six. Originally named Wayne, Odjick was soon given a new name, Gino, as the family found out there was another Wayne on the reserve.

Odjick started playing hockey at a young age, but Joe wouldn’t let him join a team until he was 11 years old. He participated with a Maniwaki youth ice hockey team in the 1983 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. Odjick played for neighbourhood teams that frequently had his father as their coach until he was 15 and they mostly faced other teams from the reserves. He thought about giving up hockey at that age to pursue other interests, but instead accepted a tryout with the Ontario-based Tier II junior Hawkesbury Hawks. Odjick, who up until that moment had played defence, quickly realised that his abilities were inadequate and switched to become an enforcer.

Gino Odjick Playing career

Odjick competed for the Memorial Cup twice during his two seasons as a young player with the Laval Titan of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The Vancouver Canucks selected Odjick in the fifth round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft (86th overall). Prior to making the Canucks his primary team in 1990, he participated in 17 games with the Milwaukee Admirals of the International Hockey League, the Canucks’ minor league club.  His rapid ascent to fan favourite led to “Gino, Gino” chants in support of him.

He served as an enforcer for the Canucks mostly. He shared a line with the productive Pavel Bure for a spell during his stay in Vancouver. Odjick set a career high in the NHL in 1993–94 with 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points. Between 1990–1991 and 1997–1998, he participated in all 8 of the Canucks’ regular seasons. He accrued more than 200 penalty minutes in six of those seasons, and more than 300 minutes twice. Both the Canucks (181 penalty minutes in 35 games) and New York Islanders contributed to his sixth season (1997–98) with more than 200 penalty minutes (31 in 13 games).

In February 2003, the Canadiens banned him for failing to report to the minor-league AHL team in Utah after he missed the most of the 2002–03 season due to a concussion sustained during preseason practise after being hit in the back of the head by a puck. As of 2005, when he was a member of the Horse Lake Thunder, he had played his last known game of organised hockey before retiring from professional hockey. Theo Fleury, Sasha Lakovic, and Dody Wood, three former NHL players who were hired ringers for the Thunder, helped them reach the Allan Cup semifinals in 2005.

Post-playing career

Returning to Vancouver in 2003, Odjick collaborated with the Musqueam First Nation to run the Musqueam Golf & Learning Academy.
In Adrian Patterson’s 2014 Canadian short film Ronny Nomad and the Legendary Napkins of Wood, Odjick played the lead role. At the Oregon Independent Film Festival, the movie was named best funny short.
On June 26, 2014, Odjick disclosed that he had been diagnosed with AL amyloidosis, a rare blood illness whose precise origin is frequently unknown.
The aberrant protein deposits caused by this illness gradually hardened Odjick’s heart, which ultimately caused him to have a heart attack. In 2015, he won the sports category of the Indspire Award.

Odjick sought a novel, experimental treatment for his condition after being told he had only a few months to live. After three years of recovery, Odjick’s heart was functioning at 60% of its potential.

At the age of 52, Odjick passed away from a heart attack on January 15, 2023. Joe and Marie-Antoinette, Odjick’s parents, passed away before him. He has five sisters and eight brothers. Dina Odjick, his sister, shared the news of his passing on Facebook, confirming it.
