Gillian Anderson arrived in New York when she was 22 years old and supported herself by working as a waiter. She made her Broadway debut with Brenda Blethyn in Alan Ayckbourn’s Absent Friends at the Manhattan Theatre Club, for which she received the Theatre World Award for “Best Newcomer” in 1990–91. Her next stage appearance was at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, in Christopher Hampton’s The Philanthropist.

Gillian Anderson came to Los Angeles in 1992 and auditioned for a year. In the same year, she starred with Karen Allen and Tess Harper in her debut feature-length picture, The Turning. The drama film is based on the play Home Fires Burning.

Although she had previously stated that she would never work on television, she had changed her mind after being unemployed for a year.
