Wife’s Death

Tina lost consciousness and sunk to the bottom, 100 feet below the water’s surface, during an October 22 journey to the wreckage site of the Yongala, a passenger ship that sank in 1911. The currents, according to Gabe, were greater than they had anticipated. He claimed he was responding to her signal to return to the dive rope where they had submerged, and that he noticed a worried expression on her face before she accidentally knocked his mask loose. She was sinking when he regained his eyes, so he surfaced to seek assistance. She was brought up by a trip director unconscious, and a doctor on board the boat was unable to resuscitate her.

Investigation

After Tina’s family made their mistrust of Watson public in 2006, the incident was reexamined. Watson’s residence was searched by the FBI and Helena Police Department in 2007, and laptops and documents were seized. In June 2008, Townsville coroner David Glascow determined that there was enough evidence of foul play to charge Watson with murder after a four-and-a-half-week inquest. Investigators from the Townsville Police Department discovered anomalies in his account and expanded their investigation with the assistance of Helena Police Sergeant Brad Flinn. Gabe had urged Tina to boost her life insurance coverage and make him the sole beneficiary, they discovered. She had not, however, done so. Tina was laid to rest in Pelham. Gabe bought a separate lot in 2007 and moved her remains there. Sergeant Flinn videotaped Watson removing flowers from the cemetery site with bolt cutters after being alerted by the Thomas family that flowers were disappearing from the grave site despite being locked down. After Tina’s death, Gabe Watson moved into the house in Hoover that he inherited from her. In August 2008, he remarried (to Kim). He voluntarily returned to Australia to face charges on May 13, 2009, bypassing the extradition process. On June 5, he admitted to failing in his obligations as his wife’s diving buddy and pled guilty to manslaughter. He was given a four-year prison sentence, with three years suspended. The Queensland attorney general later appealed the sentence, and the court decided to extend Watson’s imprisonment by six months, bringing his total term to 18 months.

Alabama Prosecution

Attorney General Troy King of Alabama stated in September that he would seek a capital murder indictment against Watson, which carries the death penalty. The state of Alabama prosecuted him because he intended to profit from insurance acquired in the state. A person cannot be deported to face a charge that carries the capital penalty unless the country in question agrees not to execute the defendant, according to Australian law. That concession was accepted by the state.
