Frene Ginwala Early Life & Background

Ginwala, an Indian South African as from the Parsi-Indian minority in western India, was born on April 25, 1932, in Johannesburg. She is an Indian South African of second generation. In the nineteenth century, her grandparents moved from India to South Africa. Although it is unknown why or how her grandparents arrived in the nation where she was born, it was probably at their own initiative because those who were indentured went to Natal and were not Parsees.
The Ginwala family would have been a part of a relatively limited community outside of Natal as Parsees and Indians. It is not a leap to claim that Dr. Ginwala comes from a highly wealthy and cosmopolitan background given that she received her education in England. However the name of the parents of Frene are unavailable.

Frene Ginwala’s Education & Career

Ginwala has written a variety of books that cover a range of topics related to the fight against injustice. She has received recognition for her work from national and local organisations and governments and made a significant contribution to creating subterranean escape routes for ANC (African National Congress) members in the aftermath of the Sharpeville massacre and the imposition of the State of Emergency (SOE) in 1960 by maintaining her incognito. Oliver Tambo, the ANC’s vice president, and Yusuf Dadoo, a key figure in the liberation movement, were among them. Additionally, she set up safe houses for people who had to stay in the nation.

Additionally, Ginwala drove the leaders of the NIC (Natal Indian Congress), Monty Naicker and J. N. Singh, who were conducting business underground after escaping the police swoop. In order to support the families left impoverished by the SOE’s five-month-long incarceration of their breadwinners, they were given the task of traveling the province and soliciting donations from anonymous sources. Later in 1960, she was forced to leave South Africa, and she, Tambo, and Dadoo set up an exile ANC headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika, which remained under British Colonial Rule until 9 December 1961.

United Republic Of Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania was established in 1964 as a result of the toppling of the Sultanate of Zanzibar in January of that year. The newly formed United Republic of Tanzania’s communication infrastructure was developed in large part thanks to Frene Ginwala. She had academic credentials from numerous African and international colleges. Frene had a law degree from Linacre College at Oxford University, was a political scientist, a historian, and a lawyer.
Ginwala won a seat in the South African Parliament in the country’s first democratic elections in 1994. She served as South Africa’s National Assembly Speaker from 1994 to 2004 after being nominated by the ANC caucus and elected by parliament.

However, Frene continued to serve in a number of international organisations after her tenure as speaker ended, including UN affiliates, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal as chancellor. In April 2005, Ginwala was chosen to serve as the University of KwaZulu-first Natal’s chancellor. She was one of just four women serving as university chancellors in South Africa at the time.
