Elena Rybakina Life and Education

Elena Rybakina was born in Moscow on June 17, 1999. She began participating in sports alongside her older sister at an early age, focusing on gymnastics and ice skating at first. When she was told she was too short to be a professional in either of those sports, she turned to tennis after her father’s suggestion. She began playing tennis when she was six years old. She had received 15 scholarship offers from universities in the United States. Rybakina had transferred from the Dynamo Sports Club to the Spartak Tennis Club, where she was coached by a number of prominent players like Andrey Chesnokov, Evgenia Kulikovskaya, and Irina Kiseleva. The last one was also one of her fitness teachers.

Elena did not begin individual training until she was a junior, instead practiced in a group of roughly eight players until she was 15 years old, and then with a group of four players until she was 18 years old. She also spent around two hours a day playing tennis and three hours a day working out. Her tennis time was limited in part due to the fact that she went to a standard high school that was not specialized in sports and had to combine tennis with education.

Elena Rybakina Career

Rybakina was previously ranked No. 3 in the world as a junior.  At the age of 14, she began competing on the ITF Junior Circuit in November 2013. In March of the following year, she won her first championship in the Grade-3 Almetievsk Cup. June, she competed in her first Grade-2 event, the Ozerov Cup in Moscow, where she finished second to compatriot Anna Blinkova. She began competing in Grade-1 events in early 2015 but had little success until reaching the final of the Belgian International Junior Championships in May, where she was defeated by Katharina Hobgarski. Rybakina made her junior Grand Slam debut at the US Open later that year, reaching the third round.

She won back-to-back Grade-1 titles after losing in the first round of the 2016 Australian Open. For the rest of the year, she struggled in singles at the junior Grand Slam and other Grade-A events. Her best result at the Grade A events came in doubles, where she finished second to Olesya Pervushina and Anastasia Potapova in an all-Russian final at the Trofeo Bonfiglio, alongside Amina Anshba. Rybakina’s junior tour career came to an end in 2017. She won her first and only Grade-A championship at the Trofeo Bonfiglio in the midst of the season, defeating Iga Witek in the final.

2014–18: Maiden ITF titles, federation switch

Rybakina joined the ITF Women’s Circuit in December 2014, when she was 15 years old. She reached three ITF singles finals and two ITF doubles finals while remaining on the junior tour, winning both of the doubles championships in 2017.  She also debuted on the WTA Tour in October 2017 at the Kremlin Cup, where she qualified for the main draw but lost in the first round against Irina-Camelia Begu.  Rybakina’s next WTA tournament, the St. Petersburg Trophy, in February 2018, saw her win her maiden WTA Tour match against Timea Bacsinszky.

In April, she moved up to No. 215 in the world rankings after finishing second to Sabina Sharipova at the $60K Lale Cup in Istanbul. Late in May, she made her debut appearance in the top 200.

Rybakina, who had just turned 19 years old at the time, received Kazakh citizenship and switched federations from Russia to Kazakhstan the following month. She had been offered financial assistance by the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation to change her nationality, which she selected over various chances to play college tennis in the United States. Rybakina, who represents Kazakhstan, competed in her maiden Grand Slam qualifying round at the US Open but did not advance to the main draw.

2019: Maiden WTA title, top 50 debut

2020: Tour-best five finals, top 20 debut

Rybakina topped the WTA Tour in finals and was tied for second in match victories during the 2020 season. She reached the finals in four of her first five events. She only lost in the finals of the Australian Open and the Qatar Open before the COVID-19 epidemic shut down the WTA Tour for more than five months. Prior to the Australian Open, she had only reached two finals in international competitions.

She overcame Zhang Shuai to win her second WTA championship at Hobart International, after losing her first final of the year against Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Shenzhen Open. She won her first two Grand Slam main-draw matches against Bernarda Pera and Greet Minnen at the Australian Open. Following the competition, she competed in two Premier finals, coming second to No. 8 Kiki Bertens and No. 2 Simona Halep, respectively, at the St. Petersburg Trophy and the Dubai Championships.

Rybakina upset two top-ten players in Dubai, No. 7 Sofia Kenin and No. 3 Karolna Plková, the latter being the highest-ranked player she had beaten to that point. These four finals propelled her to No. 17 in the world at the time the tour was suspended. She also made history by becoming the first Kazakhstani player to reach the top 20.

Rybakina stayed in Moscow for the duration of the shutdown and did not have the opportunity to practice for two and a half months. She eventually returned to training for five weeks in Bratislava, Slovakia. She lost her return match to Alexandrova when the tour returned in New York in August, and she only won one match in the US Open. Later, she won at the Italian Open against Alexandrova and then reached the final of Internationaux de Strasbourg but lost to Elina Svitolina.
