His full name is Eduardo Alvarez. He was born on January 30, 1990, to Mabel and Walter Alvarez. His parents are Cuban immigrants. He spent his childhood in Miami and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School. Alvarez has an older brother, Nick. He played professional baseball for seven years, reaching the Triple-A level. He also has a sister, Nicole who is a radio DJ in Los Angeles for KROQ FM.

Alvarez took interest in skating when he was given a pair of plastic roller skates at the age of 5. He found he had a talent and passion for the sport. He learned to perform many different tricks to show off to weekend crowds in South Beach. His coach, Bob Manning, introduced him to the ice at the age of 7. At age eleven, “Eddy the Jet” was a title he was getting famous with. He won the triple crown – national age level titles in not just inline speed skating, but also long track speed skating, and short track speed skating.

He was taken with his other love, baseball during his high school days. Though he recalled his dream of competing in the Olympics and dropped it after school to go back to skating.

Skating Career

He was the 2008 and 2009 World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championships where he won a gold medal in the 3000-meter relay at the 2009 edition. Due to poor health, he placed seventh at the 2010 Olympic Trials and missed the team.

For the 2011 season, Alvarez joined the Salt Lake Community College baseball team. He excelled there but his knees were in a bad shape. His doctor advised that Alvarez had multiple tears, in the patellar tendons of both knees.

He underwent the surgery for his knees and he admits that it was scary. His father convinced Alvarez to endure and by July Alvarez was ready to return to the National Team. When he returned to the national team it was in shambles and was going through a lot of tension due to the head coach. Alvarez’s muscles were so weak from the surgery that he could not even travel a set of stairs without guidance.

By December 2012, Alvarez had improved sufficiently to fit for the World Cup team. He participated in the 2013 US National Championships in January. Here, he was ranked fourth on the US team. During the 2013–14 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, he won a gold (at Kolomna) and a silver (at Seoul). He then won a bronze (at Shanghai) in the 500 meters.

Olympics

Alvarez placed second on the 2014 Winter Olympic Trials in the 1,500 meters and second place in the 500 meters. This secured him a spot on the Olympic team. He was the first Cuban-American male speed skater to make a U.S. Olympic team.

He faced many difficulties in the Olympics but Alvarez finished strong, as he and his teammates won the silver medal in the 5,000-meter relay final, finishing 0.271 seconds behind Russia.

Baseball career

Alvarez signed with The Chicago White Sox to a minor league contract on June 11, 2014. He made his professional appearance with the Arizona White Sox of the Rookie-level Arizona League. He was later raised to the Kannapolis Intimidators of the Class A South Atlantic League on August 12, 2014.

In May 2021, Alvarez was selected to the roster of the United States national baseball team. He qualified for baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics. On July 21, he was selected to be a flag bearer for the United States in the Olympics opening ceremony beside basketball player Sue Bird. Alvarez was the first baseball player to be chosen as a flag bearer for the United States. The baseball team went on to win silver, losing to Japan in the gold-medal game. Alvarez became the 135th athlete to compete in both the Winter and Summer Olympics and only the sixth to medal at both the Winter and Summer Olympics.
