Her full name is Dorothy Louise Vennard. She was born in New York City in 1937. Her date of birth was May 23, 1937. She has a sister and grew up with her in Palo Alto, California. Her father operated as a civil engineer. She graduated with a BA degree at Occidental College in Los Angeles. She began working as a psychiatric social worker after getting married. Later on, she earned her Master of Social Work at the University of Denver in 1967.

Right after she finished her degree she worked as a stewardess. She met Richard Lamm at a party. They met in 1959 and decided to get married in 1963. Richard Lamm, at the time of their meeting, was a lawyer and accountant, in Denver in 1963. The couple has a son and daughter together. The couple enjoys scuba diving, skiing, and mountain climbing it is also known that she has climbed 35 of the fourteeners in Colorado.

Dottie Lamm was diagnosed with breast cancer and experienced a mastectomy in August 1983. Ever since undergoing mastectomy, she has been an advocate for women’s health.

Dottie Lamm was the First Lady of Colorado through her husband’s three terms as governor. He served as the governor from 1975 to 1987. This was a perfect opportunity for her to further the agenda of the betterment of reproductive rights, equal pay for equal work, and child care. She had been writing a weekly column, in which she addressed her personal life and expressed her political, social, and feminist views. It ran from 1979 to 1996

Dottie Lamm started teaching at the University of Denver as a 1999/2000 Leo Block Fellow and give lectures on population, leadership, and risk-taking. She had been teaching for a while in different universities and places. Though, she retired in 2010.

Awards

Dottie Lamm was selected in the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 1985. She has received the honor of being described in The Women’s Foundation of Colorado’s annual Dottie Lamm Leadership Award for high school students. Her achievements do not end here, she was the receiver of the 2014 Empathy Award from Volunteers of America.
