Early Life & Family of David Lingmerth

Lingmerth is the son of Thomas and Birgitta Lingmerth and was born and raised in Trans, in the province of Smland, Sweden. He began his golf career at Trans Golf Club, a local club that he has served throughout his career. Lingmerth won his age group (15) at the Bankboken Cup, an unofficial Swedish Youth Championship held at Falun-Borlänge Golf Club, by one stroke over Henrik Norlander, who later became a PGA Tour player.

Lingmerth won the 2007 Dixie Amateur Championship at Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, in January 2008, beating off new professional world number one Brooks Koepka, who ended 11 shots behind Lingmerth. Lingmerth competed in the European Amateur Team Championship twice for Sweden. The Swedish team won a silver medal on home turf at sterker Golf Club in Stockholm in 2010, with Henrik Norlander amongst Lingmerth’s colleagues. Lingmerth spent one year at the University of West Florida and three years at the University of Arkansas, where he was a two-time All-American. He won first place in two events, one in West Florida and another in Arkansas. Lingmerth’s highest World Amateur Golf Ranking was seventh. Lingmerth graduated from college and began his professional career in June 2010. Lingmerth qualified for the Nationwide Tour in the fall of 2010 after completing all stages of the PGA Tour Qualifying School and finishing T59th (later known as the Korn Ferry Tour). During the 2011 season, Lingmerth was a member of the Nationwide Tour. He had moderate success with two-thirds-places finishes and five top-10s, but he finished 27th on the season-ending money list, missing out on a PGA Tour card by two slots; the top 25 players moved to the PGA Tour. In an attempt to acquire playing privileges, he also entered the PGA Tour Qualifying School but ended well outside the top 100. After losing a playoff earlier in the year, Lingmerth returned to the Web.com Tour in 2012 and won his maiden title at the Neediest Kids Championship in October, ending a stroke ahead of Casey Wittenberg. Lingmerth finished the season in 10th place on the money list, earning him a PGA Tour card for 2013. Lingmerth finished joint runner-up at the Humana Challenge after falling in a three-man playoff in only his second PGA Tour event. In the final round, he shot a 10-under-par 62 to qualify for the playoff with Brian Gay as well as Charles Howell III. After hitting the water with his second attempt to the par-5 18th hole, he was eliminated at the first extra hole. Lingmerth also led in the third round of the 2013 Players Championship, ending T2 two shots behind Tiger Woods. He finished 75th in his debut season to keep his card for 2014. In 2014, he ended the season in 134th position, earning a spot in the Web.com Tour Finals. He finished eighth, earning him a return to the PGA Tour. At the 2015 Memorial Tournament in Muirfield Village, Ohio, Lingmerth won for the first time on the PGA Tour. In a sudden-death playoff, Lingmerth defeated Justin Rose on the third extra hole. Lingmerth finished solo third at the 2015 Quicken Loans National, four strokes behind winner Troy Merritt, with a final round 69. Lingmerth fell in a sudden-death playoff to Jason Dufner at the CareerBuilder Challenge in January 2016. Following his runner-up finish to Brian Gay in 2013, Lingmerth lost in a playoff for the second time in the event. He failed on the second extra hole after hooking his second attempt into the water on the 18th, despite having a 20-foot putt for the win on the first playoff hole. Despite this, Lingmerth has surged into the top 50 of the world rankings. Lingmerth and Alex Norén represented Sweden at the World Cup of Golf at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia, in November 2016.
