David’s Career

David’s first Formula One driving experience came in 1993 when he joined Williams-Renault as a test driver. After the untimely death of F1 superstar Ayrton Senna in 1994, he was elevated to race alongside fellow Briton Damon Hill and made his first competitive outing in the 1994 Spanish Grand Prix. Despite the fact that DC spent the majority of his time as Hill’s second driver, Williams replaced him four times with Indycar champion Nigel Mansell. He signed a full-time contract with Williams for 1995 at the end of 1994. 1st full year: In 1995, he smelt his first whiff of triumph as he won the Portuguese Grand Prix. Throughout the 1995 season, he had numerous chances to win, but driver error and mechanical issues hampered him slightly; however, he did manage five pole positions.  McLaren’s Master: In 1996, McLaren saw something in DC and offered him a contract to drive alongside Mika Hakkinen, the eventual winner. The Mercedes team, who had just received a new engine, had a frenetic year, battling to find any power in the engine. In 1997, DC finished third in the driver’s championship, along with Jean Alesi. By 1998, McLaren had resolved their engine issues and was consistently the fastest car on the track, but it was DC’s teammate Mika Hakkinen who took advantage of the situation and won the championship. In his third year at McLaren, 1999, the Scottsman’s confidence was shaken by a combination of terrible luck and driver blunders, which saw him finish fourth in the driver standings. Hakkinen went on to win the driver’s championship for the second year in a row, but McLaren lost the constructor’s championship due to DC’s performance throughout the season, which Ferrari was more than ready to accept. David’s greatest year at McLaren was around the beginning of the millennium, when he was embroiled in a close battle for the driver’s championship with Michael Schumacher and teammate Hakkinen, but he lost out and finished third. He stayed with McLaren for another three years, but many considered this as his declining years due to a lack of performance and terrible luck. Juan Pablo Montoya was confirmed as DC’s replacement at McLaren alongside Kimi Raikkonen near the conclusion of 2004, a disappointing tenth position in the driver’s standings didn’t assist Coulthard’s cause, and DC’s nine-year stint with the “Silver Bullets” was over. Prepared for Red Bull : Red Bull Racing, a newly founded team, saw experience in David Coulthard and signed him to the squad in 2005. RBR believed that DC would be able to impart some knowledge to Christian Klien and Vitantonio Liuzzi, who were both novices. After the 2006 Hungarian Grand Prix, it was reported that RBR would offer the Scotsman a contract for 2007, putting him in a team with Australian Mark Webber. RBR had a sluggish start to the 2007 season, but DC scored his first points in Bahrain and finished second in the Spanish Grand-Prix. RBR was pleased to have some points on the table, and on July 6th, they extended DC’s contract for another year, bringing him back to RBR for his final year as a driver. David waited until the British Grand-Prix before announcing his intention to retire as a driver.  He retired on lap 1 after colliding with Sebastian Vettel in his last British Grand Prix. Despite the fact that DC hasn’t won any championships during his tenure in Formula One, no one can disagree that he has been a great advocate for the sport. Following his retirement from Formula One, Coulthard remained a consultant for Red Bull and joined the BBC as a Formula One commentator and pundit.
