Coolio: Wiki, Bio, Bio, Age, Real Name, Death, Albums, Children, Songs, Drugs: Artis Leon Ivey Jr was an American rapper, record producer and actor. He was born on the 1st of August 1963 in Monessen, Pennsylvania south of Pittsburgh. Artis Leon Ivey Jr was popular by his stage name Coolio. With the releases of his albums It Takes a Thief (1994), Gangsta’s Paradise (1995), and My Soul (1996), Coolio became a well-known artist in the mid to late 1990s (1997), he even got a Grammy Award-winning hit single for his “Gangsta’s Paradise” in 1995.

Unfortunately, the rapper died on the 28th of September 2022 at the age of 59, Sheila Finegan, Coolio’s agent, informed that the rapper had passed away at a friend’s house in Los Angeles. The rapper was found to be dead around 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Doctors did not find any immediate cause of death. Still, his death was unexpected at the age of 59.

Coolio Childhood and Early Life

Coolio or Artis Leon Ivey Jr was born in poverty as his father Artis Leon Ivey Sr. was a carpenter and Coolio was prone to asthma attacks in early childhood. When Coolio was two years old, his father left the family, and when he was eight, his mother relocated the family to Compton, California. Colio was also fond of reading books as the library was just a block away from their home in Compton.

After being promoted from fifth to seventh grade, Coolio’s life began to wander. He was regularly bullied by the older kids and after some time his mother and stepfather broke up and his mother turned to alcohol and lost her job also, thus The Coolio suddenly found himself without that support from his family. At that point, he began running with the local gangs and developed the persona of a crazy man. He even carried weapons to his school. He was even imprisoned for ten months after being accused of attempting to cash a money order seized during an armed robbery. 

Coolio tried to escape the situation after learning his lesson and vowing never to enter jail again. But by 1985, he had developed a crack cocaine addiction. Coolio sought support when he finally realised how out of control his life had become. Coolio sought rehab to recover from his cocaine addiction.

Coolio attended Compton Community College after high school, where he resumed his high school passion for rap and started participating in contests.

When Coolio was in his 20s and hanging out in Compton playing the guitar, one of his friends asked, “Who do you think you are, Coolio Iglesias?” in reference to Latin singer Julio Iglesias. The name got stuck with him and everybody started calling him Coolio

After the death of his Mother in 1987, Coolio decided to fully immerse himself in raping and music and shoot his first rap Watch Gonna Do in 1987 and You’re Gonna Miss Me in the same year. In the year 1991, he joined the band, group WC and the Maad Circle. 

His debut solo album, “It Takes a Thief,” was released in 1994 and featured the breakthrough song “Fantastic Voyage,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as other singles including “County Line” and “I Remember.”

He released an album with the same name in 1995, leveraging on the popularity of “Gangsta’s Paradise.” also two hit singles from this double platinum album were “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “Too Hot.” He performed the songs “It’s All the Way Live (Now)” and “Hit ’em High” along with four other rappers for the films “Eddie” and “Space Jam” respectively in 1996.

In the year 1996 Tommy Boy Records cancelled the singer’s contract after the album “My Soul,” which was certified platinum and had the mega-smash single “C U When U Get There,” performed less well than anticipated.

He published four albums between 2001 and 2008, “Coolio.com,” “El Cool Magnifico,” “The Return of the Gangsta,” and “Steal Hear,” but none of them was able to make it at top of the charts.

The rapper continues to appear at concerts. He performed in Ketchum, Idaho, in February 2014 alongside Goast, Jarel, and DJ Locomotive.

He even appeared in the Television show Celebrity Fear Factor in 2002 and won the Celebrity Bootcamp in the same year. In 2008, he hosted “Cookin’ with Coolio,” an online cooking programme, on the website My Damn Channel, along with jazz musician Jarez. In 2009 he appeared on the TV show Celebrity Big Brother but was soon sent out of the show disrespecting his housemates.

He finished second in the Food Network reality competition “Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off” in January 2012. He received $10,000 for his charity while standing in for the Music Saves Lives group.

In 1996, Coolio got engaged to Josefa Salinas but got divorced in 2000. Coolio has two twin daughters Kate and Shayne. According to reports, the late rapper was also the father of six additional children: Grtis, Milan, Darius, Zhane, Kate, and Shayne Ivey.
