Cowherd began his broadcasting career as the sports director of KVBC in Las Vegas and a sports anchor on other stations before joining ESPN in 2003, where he hosted a radio talk show on the ESPN Radio network and was one of the original hosts of ESPN’s television program SportsNation, as well as Colin’s New Football Show. Cowherd is the host of Fox Sports Radio and Fox Sports 1’s The Herd with Colin Cowherd. The Herd is FS1’s most renowned studio show. He was also the anchor of FS1’s Speak For Yourself. In 2021, Cowherd developed and launched his own podcast network, “The Volume.”

Cowherd was born in the town of Aberdeen in the state of Washington. His dad, Charles, was an optician, and his mom, Patricia (d. 2014), was a housewife who moved to the United States when she was 14 years old. Marlene, his older sister, is his only sibling. Cowherd was born and raised in Grayland, Washington, a small fishing village about 130 miles south of Seattle. Due to his father’s drinking, his parents split when he was young, and he and his sister were reared primarily by their mother. During his boyhood, Cowherd describes himself as a loner, spending a lot of time on his roof and listening to baseball games on the radio. In 1982, he graduated from Westport’s Ocosta High School. Cowherd was an All-Far West Conference quarterback for the football team and an All-Far West Conference guard for the basketball team in high school. Coach Jim McElwain (current Central Michigan University football head coach) was Cowherd’s roommate at Eastern Washington.

Cowherd started his professional career as a play-by-play broadcaster for the Las Vegas Stars, a Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. He later went to KVBC in Las Vegas, where he has five times been named Nevada Sportscaster of the Year. He served as a weekend sports host at WTVT in Tampa, Florida, from 1993 to 1995. In 1996, he traveled to Portland, Oregon to work as a sports anchorman for KGW-TV. Cowherd was hired by ESPN Radio to substitute Tony Kornheiser in the late-morning slot (10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET) in 2003. Cowherd’s show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, is a Fox Sports Radio syndicated talk radio show. It was broadcast on ESPN Radio affiliates across the United States and online at ESPNRadio.com from 2004 until 2015. Cowherd told his listeners on The Herd on April 5, 2007, to “blow up” the sports blog The Big Lead by visiting its home page at the same time. The site was unable to cope with the increased traffic and was taken offline for nearly 96 hours. LeAnne Schreiber, ESPN’s new Ombudsman, penned a piece in which she expressed her displeasure with Cowherd’s actions. Cowherd’s debut book, You Herd Me!
