In 1953, he began his coaching career with young high school athletes at the South San Antonio High School. He continued his job there for 14 years, during which his team won the Class 3A State Championships 6 times, in 1958, 1959, 1961, 1963, 1964, and 1967.

In 1968, he was invited to coach the baseball team at the University of Texas at Austin. He led his own collegiate team, Texas Longhorns to 22 Southwest Conference championships and made a record 17 College World Series appearances. The team won two national championships in 1975 and 1983. Many of his students, later went to play Major League Baseball. Some of them are. His coaching career extended from 1953 to 1996.

Cliff was awarded the University of Texas Hall of Fame in 1983, the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1992, and a Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Not just that, but he was also awarded a James Keller Sportsmanship Award in 1998. In 2006, he was named the inaugural member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
