He served as a member of the Australian Liberal Party (ALP) also served as an MP (Member of Parliament) for Pearce since 2013. Prior to entering the Parliament, he worked as a lawyer starting as a commercial litigator at Clayton Ultz before continuing to public practice. He almost spent a year as an advisor to the Federal Minister for Justice. He began working in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions as a Senior Prosecutor. Before contesting in the 2008 elections Christian Porter began working as a lecturer at Curtin University and the Western University of Australia as well as working part-time as well as a Prosecutor. Christian won the 2008 election and secured the newly created seat of Bateman.

On 20 September 2015, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull stated that Porter would restore Scott Morrison as Social Services Minister as part of a Cabinet overhaul.
