Wallace was born on October 12, 1947,  in Chicago, Illinois, to Mike Wallace and Norma Kaphan, longtime CBS 60 Minutes reporters. Wallace does seem to be Jewish, as were both his mom and dad. Because he was born on Columbus Day, he was given the name Christopher. Peter (1942-1962), his older brother, died tragically at the age of 19 in a mountain climbing accident. He did grow up with his mom and stepfather Bill Leonard, President of CBS News after his parents divorced when he was one year old. When he was hired as an assistant to Walter Cronkite at the 1964 Republican National Convention, Leonard gave him his first taste of political journalism. Wallace and his father Mike did not have a relationship until he was 14 years old. Wallace attended Harvard College and the Hotchkiss School.

Chris Wallace’s Career

During the 1964 Republican National Convention, Wallace worked as an assistant to Walter Cronkite as a teenager. He started working as a national journalist for The Boston Globe after graduating from Harvard University, where his boss described him as an “aggressive and ambitious reporter.” After witnessing the impact of television on the headlines at the 1972 Republican National Convention, he decided to pursue a career in broadcast journalism, first at NBC (1975–1988) as a White House correspondent alongside CBS’s Lesley Stahl and ABC’s Sam Donaldson. Wallace was voted democrat in Washington, D.C., for more than two decades, according to The Washington Post in 2006. Wallace stated that he did so for pragmatic reasons, citing the Democratic Party’s dominance in city politics, saying, “If you want a say in who will be the next mayor or councilman, you just had to vote in the Democratic primary.” He claimed that he had previously voted for candidates by both major parties. Wallace also hosted Meet the Press and worked as an anchor for NBC Nightly News. From 1989 to 2003, he worked for ABC as an anchor for Primetime Thursday and Nightline. Wallace is the only individual to have hosted and moderated multiple major political Sunday talk shows in the United States, which he did while at NBC. Wallace left ABC in 2003 after another 14 years to join Fox News. In 2003, Wallace overtook Tony Snow as the presenter of Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace. Wallace and Shepard Smith earned recognition at FOX for their credibility as reporters. Wallace has covered nearly every major political event during his 17 years at FOX, as well as securing several high-profile interview sessions with dignitaries and US leaders. He landed President Barack Obama’s first interview with Fox in February 2009. On March 3, 2016, Wallace moderated the 2016 Republican Party Presidential debate on Fox News alongside Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly. In 2017, he conducted his first interview with President Donald Trump since his election. Wallace took a seat with President Donald Trump for a wide-ranging press conference outside the White House on July 19, 2020. The interview contest drew a lot of attention on social media and in the news. Wallace was praised for holding Trump accountable and fact-checking his statements in real-time. In the midst of nationwide Black Lives Matter protests over the death of George Floyd, Wallace pressed Trump on his assertion that Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee for 2020, wanted to “defund and abolish” the police, to which Trump responded, “No, sir, he does not.” Wallace pressed Trump on his exaggerated claims about the mortality rate and COVID-19 testing in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic.
