Cate Campbell Life and Education

Cate is the first of five children born to Eric, an accountant, and Jenny, a nurse, both from South Africa. Bronte, Jessica, Hamish, and Abigail are her four younger siblings (three sisters and one brother). Hamish, her younger brother, has severe cerebral palsy and requires 24-hour care. Jenny was a competitive swimmer who taught her four girls to swim in the family pool. Cate also remembers as a child swimming alongside Hippopotami in Lake Malawi. Her father, Eric, used to go sailing on weekends in this lake. As children, Campbell and her siblings were homeschooled. While she was growing up, her mother read the Bible to her on a regular basis. The Campbells had a large house with no television. Turkeys, guinea pigs, dogs, cats, and chickens were among their many pets. “Every morning was like an Easter egg hunt; the chickens would deposit eggs all over the house,” Campbell says. Campbell claims she was unable to sing or dance during her school years, but she excelled in swimming. She also mentioned that she obtained high honors in school for public speaking. Aside from that, she describes herself as a “average student.” Campbell began competitive swimming shortly after the Campbells relocated from Malawi to Australia in 2001. She attended Kenmore State High School in Brisbane, Queensland, for her senior school education. Campbell has been studying Mass Communication at Queensland University of Technology since 2011. She has mentioned that after she retires, she wants to pursue a job that blends her passion for the media with her love of sports. She is a member of the Queensland University of Technology’s Elite Athlete program.

Cate Campbell Personal Life

Campbell spoke out about her body image issues in 2015. She admitted that the pressure from TV and magazine models made her want to be thin, but that it had gotten to the point where she was sick. The remark “thin swimmers aren’t terrific swimmers” stood out in her head after she read a chapter in Michael Phelps’ book Beneath the Surface. Her mother insisted on seeing a dietician, and she now believes that “the sum of your worth is so much more than what you look like.” She has previously stated that she is a Christian. She suffered from glandular fever in 2010 and 2011 and was unable to compete. She recognized she couldn’t build her identity on her swimming career because it was always full of flaws. Instead, she believed she needed to rely on God for her “strength and love,” who “allows me to see beyond the here and now and into the future that I shall share with Him (in paradise) someday.” She was attending a local Baptist church in Brisbane at the time. Campbell shared a home with her sister Bronte until December 2016. They are no longer housemates as of 2017. She went on to purchase a home in Morningside, Queensland. Hiking, listening to music, doing crossword puzzles in the newspaper, and brewing Kombucha are some of her favorite pastimes. She is also the proud owner of a kayak. She is a supporter of Nexus Care, a non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance the lives of persons living in poverty in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
