Carolyn Bertozzi Wiki, Age, Bio, Nobel, Education, Net worth, Family

Carolyn Bertozzi Wiki, Age, Bio, Nobel, Education, Net worth, Family: Carolyn Bertozzi is an American Chemist and a Nobel Price winner in chemistry. She was born on 10 October 1966(55 years old) in Boston, Massachusetts, the U.S., her full name is Carolyn Ruth Bertozzi. She is famously known for coining the concept of “bioorthogonal chemistry” for chemical reactions compatible with living systems. Her recent work includes the creation of chemical instruments to investigate the role of cell surface sugars termed glycans in diseases like cancer, inflammation, and viral infections like COVID-19.

Carolyn Bertozzi Nobel Prize: On 5th October 2022 Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that HHMI Investigator Carolyn Bertozzi is the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the creation of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry. Along with Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless were also named recipients of the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the same work. Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said that their research  “led to a revolution in how chemists think about linking molecules together”.

According to the committee, click chemistry offers quick and simple reactions in which “molecular building blocks snap together swiftly.” The principle can have practical applications in the development of drugs and medicine, such as better-tailored cancer treatments. Carolyn Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless will receive total prize money of $915000, the prize money will be distributed equally between the three.

Carolyn Bertozzi Early Life and Childhood

Carolyn Bertozzi was born into a family of academics, her father William Bertozzi is a professor of physics at MIT, and also founded and developed the Bates Linear Accelerator Center, where he served as Head of Research Operations. Her mother’s name was Norma Bertozzi and she has two sisters, one of whom, Andrea Bertozzi, is on the mathematics faculty at UCLA.

Carolyn Bertozzi Education

Carolyn Bertozzi earned her A.B. summa cum laude in chemistry from Harvard University, where she collaborated on the design and building of a photoacoustic calorimeter with Professor Joe Grabowski.   She was a member of several bands as a student. Her most well-known song was Bored with Education, which featured future Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello. She collaborated with Chris Chidsey at Bell Labs after earning her Harvard degree in 1988.

Bertozzi earned her PhD in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, working with Mark Bednarski on the chemical synthesis of oligosaccharide analogues. While at Berkeley, she found that viruses may bind to carbohydrates in the body. The discovery led her to her current field of study, glycobiology. Bednarski received a colon cancer diagnosis during Bertozzi’s third year of graduate school, forcing him to take a leave of absence and alter his career path by enrolling in medical school. Bertozzi and the rest of the lab were left to finish their PhD work without direct supervision.

Carolyn Bertozzi Career and Research

After receiving her PhD from Berkeley, Bertozzi worked as a postdoctoral associate with Steven Rosen at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she examined the activity of endothelium oligosaccharides in enhancing cell adhesion at inflammatory locations. Bertozzi was able to change the protein and sugar molecules in the walls of living cells so that the cells would accept foreign objects like implants while collaborating with Rosen at UCSF.

Bertozzi started teaching at Berkeley in 1996. She has been an HHMI investigator since 2000. She developed the discipline of bioorthogonal chemistry in 1999, while working at HHMI and Berkeley, and coined the phrase in 2003.  Researchers are now able to chemically alter molecules in living things without disrupting cellular functions thanks to new research and techniques. In order to join the ChEM-H Institute, Bertozzi relocated to Stanford University in 2015.

Carolyn Bertozzi

Bertozzi focuses on the glycobiology of chronic illnesses like tuberculosis, inflammatory diseases like arthritis, and infectious diseases like cancer. In particular, Bertozzi has improved knowledge of the oligosaccharides on the surface of cells that are important for cell recognition and intercellular communication. Bertozzi has studied glycocalyx, the sugars that round the cell membrane, using the methods of bioorthogonal chemistry. Her research has advanced the biotherapeutics field.

Carolyn Bertozzi Awards

Carolyn Bertozzi’s Personal Life

There is not much information available about Carolyn Bertozzi’s Personal Life on the internet. We will about her personal life as soon as we get it. Although we do know that Bertozzi is an open lesbian and has been out since the late 1980s.

Carolyn Bertozzi Biotechnology startups

Bertozzi is actively involved in working with biotechnology start-ups in addition to her academic work. Bertozzi and Steve Rosen co-founded Thios Pharmaceuticals in the early 2000s, the first firm to target sulfation pathways.

Bertozzi established Redwood Bioscience in Emeryville, California, as her own firm in 2008. SMARTag, a method of site-specific protein modification utilized by Redwood Bioscience, enables tiny medications to bind to particular locations on proteins, which can be used to treat cancer. Catalent Pharma Solutions bought Redwood Bioscience in 2014. Bertozzi is still a member of the company’s advisory board for the biologics division.

She co-founded Enable Biosciences in 2014, specializing in biotechnologies for the at-home diagnosis of type 1 diabetes, HIV, and other disorders.

Bertozzi joined Palleon Pharma of Waltham, Massachusetts, as a co-founder in 2015. Glycoimmune checkpoint inhibitors are the main area of research for Palleon Pharma in terms of prospective cancer treatments.

Bertozzi participated in the founding of InterVenn Biosciences in 2017, a company that enhances glycoproteomics for target and biomarker identification, ovarian cancer diagnosis, and forecasting the success and failure of clinical trials by utilizing mass spectrometry and artificial intelligence.

In 2018, she co-founded the Grace Science Foundation. The organization is focused on creating effective and affordable therapies to treat NGLY1 deficiency.
