Billy James Stanlake (born 4 November 1994) is a cricketer from Australia. He is a fast bowler who represented Australia in the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup as well as One Day and Twenty20 International cricket for the main national team.

He now plays domestic cricket for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. Stanlake, who stands at 204 cm, is the tallest person to ever represent Australia in international cricket.

His bowling is recognized for its outstanding bounce and pace since his height provides a favorable angle for bounce and he can bowl at 150 km/h while swinging the ball.

Stanlake was born in Hervey Bay, Queensland, and grew up on the Fraser Coast for the first six years of his life.

He and his brother played Australian rules football for the Hervey Bay Bombers, which was encouraged by their father Warren Stanlake, who played for the Foots Cray Football Club in the Victorian Football League.

Billy began playing cricket for Southport-Labrador and attended The Southport School after the family migrated to the Gold Coast in 2001. (TSS).

He played for TSS’s First XI cricket side in back-to-back GPS Premiership seasons in 2010-11, winning the Westcott Family Trophy for First XI bowler of the year in both seasons. Stanlake made his first-grade debut for the Gold Coast Dolphins in October 2011 at the age of 16.

Stanlake was a very successful junior cricketer in both domestic and international competitions after switching to cricket. In the 2013 under-19 national championships, he represented his home state of Queensland, taking fourteen wickets in three matches, with scores of 6/30 and 5/40.

Stanlake represented Australia in twelve junior One Day Internationals from 2011 to 2014. His finest bowling performance came against Sri Lanka in 2011, when he was only sixteen years old. He got four wickets for 37 runs, dismissing the majority of Sri Lanka’s top order.

Stanlake was granted a rookie contract with the Queensland state cricket team following his Under-19 World Cup heroics, however, he missed the full season due to stress fractures in his back. In the 2015-16 season, he instead made his debut in all three major forms of cricket (first-class, one-day, and Twenty20).

On 14 November 2015, he made his first-class debut against South Australia, taking four wickets for 63 runs. During the 2015-16 Big Bash League mid-season break, Stanlake played for the Adelaide Strikers of South Australia. He made his Strikers debut on December 28, 2015. Former English Test cricketer Andrew Flintoff predicted that he will be able to increase his pace in the future.

Stanlake was promoted from a rookie contract to a full contract with Queensland in 2016, Stanlake was out of cricket for 10 months due to injury, but when he returned, he swiftly rose to national selection.

Because of an upcoming tour of India, Australia’s national team selectors decided to rest their fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc in January 2017, and they felt that Stanlake’s unusual height and fast pace could both be strong assets in international cricket, so he was named to Australia’s One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Pakistan.

He had only played two first-class matches and four one-day matches for Queensland at the time of his selection. On January 13, 2017, he made his ODI debut for Australia against Pakistan.

He was struck down by sickness after only three overs but recovered to take his maiden wicket in his second outing, dismissing Shoaib Malik. In February 2017, he was purchased for 30 lakhs by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the 2017 Indian Premier League, then in April, he was signed by Cricket Australia.

He recovered in time to play for the Strikers in BBL|07, collecting eleven wickets in 10 matches, but he missed the final, which the Strikers won for the first time.

Cricket Australia granted him a national contract for the 2018-19 season in April 2018. Stanlake was re-signed in May 2019 to play for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in the t20 Blast in England.

Stanlake, however, was ruled out of playing for Derbyshire due to injury in July 2019. After quitting the Queensland cricket squad in May 2022, he joined the Tasmania cricket team.
