Lahiri was born in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, to a Hindu Brahmin family. Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, both from Jalpaiguri, were well-known Bengali classical and Shyama Sangeet singers and musicians. [requires citation] He is the only child in the family. His maternal uncle, singer Kishore Kumar, is one of his relatives. At the age of three, Lahiri began playing the tabla. He was initially taught by his parents. He is most known for his disco-style songs, although he has also written some beautiful tunes, such as the songs from Chalte Chalte and Zakhmee. Parts of Lahiri’s song “Thoda Resham Lagta Hai” were sampled in American R&B artist Truth Hurts’ song “Addictive” from 2002. Interscope Records and its parent business, Universal Music Group, were sued for more than $500 million by copyright holders Saregama India, Ltd. Following that, a federal court in Los Angeles ordered that no further CDs be sold until and until Lahiri’s name was included in the song’s credits.
