Awkwafina was born in Stony Brook, New York on Long Island,  United States on June 2, 1988. Her father was a Chinese American and her mother was a Korean. Her father’s name was Wally. Her mother was a painter and she immigrated to the United States from South Korea in 1972. She died due to pulmonary hypertension when Awkwafina was just four. Awkwafina was raised by her father and her paternal grandparents. She became very close to her paternal grandmother. Her paternal great-grandparents were Chinese immigrants in the 1940s and open the Cantonese restaurant in Flushing Queens which was one of the first neighbourhood’s Chinese restaurants.
