Asa Butterfield Career

In 2008, he appeared as Donny in the television series Ashes to Ashes as a guest star. Butterfield starred in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas the same year, when he was ten years old. Butterfield was discovered early in the audition process, according to director Mark Herman. He was the third hopeful he met in person, and he was on the first audition tape he got. Butterfield’s performance was amazing, but Herman chose him only after auditioning hundreds of other boys, “so no stone was left unturned.” Producer David Heyman and director Mark Herman were seeking for someone who could depict the protagonist’s innocence, so they quizzed each of the kids about the Holocaust. Butterfield’s understanding was limited, and it was maintained that way throughout production so that he could portray his character’s naivety more easily. The film’s last sequences were shot at the close of production to prepare both him and Jack Scanlon for the emotional conclusion.

Asa Butterfield beat out hundreds of other youngsters for the part, and he also got a part in Mr. Nobody, which he auditioned for at the same time. He decided against pursuing the latter post. He played Mordred in the Merlin episode “The Beginning of the End” in 2008, and he reprised the role in several later episodes. He had a brief role in The Wolfman in 2010. In Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, he played Norman Green (2010). The picture, as well as his performance, garnered good feedback.
