He began his career as a political pundit before becoming the editor of The Independent newspaper (1996–1998) and the political editor of BBC News from 2000 to 2005. From September 2005, he began hosting a political show on BBC One called Sunday AM, which is currently known as The Andrew Marr Show. Marr took over as host of BBC Radio 4’s long-running morning debate show Start the Week Monday in 2002. Donald Marr, an investment trust manager, and his wife Valerie raised Marr in Glasgow, Scotland. “My family is devout and goes to church, and I went to church as a youngster,” he stated of his upbringing. Marr attended Craigflower Preparatory School in Dundee, an independent high school, and Loretto School in Musselburgh, East Lothian, an independent school where he was a member of Pinkie House and a perfect. He proceeded to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, to study English and received a first-class honors degree.

Andrew Marr and his wife, The Guardian political journalist Jackie Ashley, live in Primrose Hill, north London. They married in August 1987 in Surrey. Lord Ashley of Stoke (1922–2012), a Labour life peer, is his father. The couple has two girls and a boy. Marr was rushed to the hospital on January 8, 2013, after suffering a stroke at home. He was released from the hospital on March 3 and stated that he wanted to return to work later that year. On 14 April, he appeared as a guest on The Andrew Marr Show, and he returned again to interview David Miliband and David Cameron, the Prime Minister, before it was announced that he will return to hosting the show on September 1, 2013.

In 1981, Marr began working for The Scotsman as a trainee and junior business correspondent. He relocated to London in 1984, where he worked as a legislative journalist for the newspaper before becoming a political correspondent in 1986. Marr met Anthony Bevins, a political journalist who became a mentor and personal friend. Marr’s first job at The Independent, as a member of the newspaper’s launch crew, was likewise arranged by Bevins in 1986.
Marr departed soon after and went to work for The Economist, where he contributed to the weekly “Bagehot” political column and eventually became the political editor in 1988. Marr has stated that his stint at The Economist “changed me a lot” and “made me a better person.”
