Early Life and Education

On December 29, 1970, Aled Jones was born. He was the only child of Nest Rowlands, a teacher, and Derek John Jones, a shipbuilder’s draughtsman, and was born in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, Wales. Aled joined Bangor Cathedral’s choir when he was nine years old, and within two years he was the lead soloist. At the Urdd Eisteddfod in 1982, Aled won the Cerdd Dant solo events for contestants under the age of 12. In 1985, at the age of 14, he had a top 5 success with his version of ‘Walking in the Air.’

He was raised in Llandegfan, Anglesey, in a tiny Welsh-speaking village, and attended Ysgol David Hughes (a secondary school). Jones entered Bangor Cathedral’s choir when he was nine years old and became lead soloist within two years, however, he was never Head Chorister. Hefina Orwig Evans, a member of the church, was so taken with Jones’ treble voice that she wrote a letter to record label Sain, and he was promptly signed. Jones took first place in the Cerdd Dant solo events for competitors under the age of 12 at the Urdd Eisteddfod in 1982.

Aled Jones made his acting debut in Shaun McKenna’s adaption of Richard Llewellyn’s How Green Was My Valley at the Royal Theatre in September 1990, playing the adolescent Huw Morgan.

Aled Jones went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before embarking on an adult recording career, showcasing his developed baritone voice in mostly religious/inspirational material. In 1995, he starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on a Blackpool pier in a long-running performance. He played the young Tom Gradgrind (non-singing) in a large-scale national touring production of Charles Dickins’ Hard Times from September 1996 to May 1997. Brighton Theatre Royal and Bath Theatre Royal were among the venues.

Jones released his autobiography, Aled: The Autobiography, in 2005, which he co-wrote with Darren Henley. Jones’ longer autobiography, Aled Jones: My Story, was published in 2013. Aled Jones went on a promotional tour in Australia after the release of his debut baritone album, “Aled,” on the Universal Music label in May 2003. Since then, he has successfully toured there five times, appearing in eight cities in December 2003, August 2006, October 2008, August/September 2010 and February 2015. In aid of the Children in Need appeal, he has released two tracks with Terry Wogan.

Aled Jones played Caractacus Potts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from July 3 to August 30, 2008. From November 2009 to January 9, 2010, he played Bob Wallace in White Christmas at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, and The Lowry, Salford Quays, and from November 11 to 26, 2011 at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, from December 1- to 17 at the Grand Canal Theatre, Dublin, and from December 1- to 17 at the Empire Theatre, Liverpool (December 22, 2011-January 7, 2012) Jones made his West End debut on November 8, reprising his role as Bob Wallace in White Christmas at the Dominion Theatre, Tottenham Court Road.

Following the release of Aled Jone’s “Forty Favourite Hymns” in 2009, he released a second book, Favourite Christmas Carols, on October 28, 2010. He toured the UK with the book in November and December 2010. His CD, “Aled’s Christmas Gift,” was released on November 20 to go along with the book. Following the resignation of Sarah Kennedy, he was confirmed on October 11, 2010, to take over as stand-in presenter of BBC Radio 2’s early morning breakfast slot, a post he has covered on occasion in the years preceding up to her departure. He took up this spot for six weeks, till his UK tour began.

Isabel Suckling, the youngest classical recording artist signed by Decca Records and the first choirgirl to sign a record contract with a major music company to date, is being mentored by Aled Jones. Jones praised Suckling’s debut album, describing it as “breathtaking,” and it was released on November 29, 2010. Jones hosted Classical Destinations III, Aled Jones’ Ultimate Travel Guide to Classical Music, a television and DVD series filmed on his travels in the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, and Australia in 2011. As a baritone, he has released a number of popular albums, some of which feature Libera’s voice. He is currently the Choirboys’ co-manager.
