He started working at NBC when he was hired at WKYC in Cleveland, which was an NBC-owned-and-operated station. He worked there for 5 years after which he was promoted to the network’s flagship outlet, WNBC-TV in his hometown. Later on, he returned to New York and started working as a regular weeknight weathercaster after replacing 27-year WNBC-TV veteran Dr. Frank Field. After that, he mostly worked as a substitute for other famous reporters on the channel, during which he worked as a substitute for  Matt Lauer on the “Today Showand forecaster Joe Witte on the NBC News program “NBC News at Sunrise”.

In, 1995 he had his own show on NBC called “The Al Roker Show” which was a weekend talk show on CNBC. He also gained mass recognition when he was asked to join an episode of the talk show “Late Night with David Letterman“. Soon after he became the forecaster for “Weekend Today” and also occasionally worked as a substitute for Willard Scott, in the weekday edition of “Today”.

He started working on the “Today” Show, on the regular weekday weather slot from 26th January 1996. During his show, he forecasted the weather and interviewed people outside giving them some camera time and this became the main interest of his show. With time, he also innovated other segments. Later on, he also started co-hosting the third hour of Today called “Today’s Take”, from November 12, 2012. However, this show was canceled in 2017, when the show “Megyn Kelly Today aired. However, this show ran for only a year, after which Roker returned to co-hosting the 3rd hour.

Al Roker did a non-stop, 34-hour weather forecast on NBC, from 10:05 p.m. on November 12, 2014, until about 8:00 a.m. on November 14, 2014, which is popularly known as the “Roker-thon”. This event was intended for raising funds for the Crowdrise Campaign to benefit the military and USO. He also did another version of this program named “Roker-thon 2” where he reported weather from all 50 states and Washington, D.C. during the week from November 6 to November 13, 2015. This event aimed at raising funds for the “Feeding America” campaign. He did not stop at two and came back with another version of Roker-thon called “Roker-thon 3” and this time he went to visit different colleges setting a Guinness world record at each one.

He has been hosting NBC’s coverage of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade since 1995 where he would interview celebrities during the parade and cut ribbons at the beginning of the show. For years from 1996 to 1997, a sports enthusiast Roker hosted a game show on MSNBC called “Remember This?” and in 2008 he also hosted NBC’s “Celebrity Family Feud”. Other than the different NBC shows, Roker also forecasted for other radio Stations such as New York smooth jazz radio station WQCD and  Cleveland smooth jazz station WNWV.

Al Roker has suffered from a number of health issues for a long time. IN 2001, he had a total knee arthroplasty on his left knee. He was overweight for a long time. He tried several diet plans but all of them failed. So he underwent a Gastric Bypass Surgery and lost 100 pounds. He underwent back surgery in 2005, another knee replacement surgery in 2016, went on emergency carpal tunnel surgery in 2018, and a hip replacement surgery in 2019.

In 2020, he was diagnosed with Prostate cancer, and thankfully the surgery went well and he took a long time resting at his home. Recently, in November 2022 he was hospitalized with blood clots in his lungs. However, he assured me that he is going to be alright and will return as soon as possible.
